Mission Statement

The department serves the university by providing a supportive atmosphere in which students are encouraged to be active in their learning. Students graduating from the Sport Studies program are prepared to pursue career opportunities in Health and Physical Education, Exercise Science, Recreation-Wellness-Sport, Sport Management, and Coaching. An additional purpose is to provide all students with opportunities to develop physical, social, intellectual, emotional, environmental and spiritual health. The department also provides courses in health and physical fitness.

Exercise Science Educational Outcomes

  1. Exercise Science majors will demonstrate an understanding of key concepts, terminology, theory and research related to their field of study.
  2. Exercise Science majors will demonstrate competencies in a variety of skills and abilities associated with their field of study.
  3. Exercise Science majors will be able to think critically and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and will demonstrate technological competencies.
  4. Exercise Science majors will be prepared for professional careers and/or graduate studies in their field.

Health and Physical Education Educational Outcomes

  1. Health and Physical Education majors will know and apply discipline-specific and theoretical concepts critical to the development of health educated and physically educated individuals.
  2. Health and Physical Education majors will be able to plan and deliver instruction that demonstrates mastery of health and physical education content, appropriate use of pedagogical skills, and appropriate integration of technology.       
  3. Health and Physical Education majors will demonstrate the ability to collect and analyze data from formative and summative assessment to support learning for all students.        

Recreation, Wellness, and Sport Educational Outcomes

  1. Recreation, Wellness, and Sport majors will demonstrate effective skills in written and oral communications using appropriate skills and technologies.
  2. Recreation, Wellness, and Sport majors will demonstrate a knowledge of the sociological, historical, and philosophical aspects of sport, recreation, and wellness.
  3. Recreation, Wellness, and Sport majors will acquire the skills necessary to design and implement recreation and fitness programs.
  4. Recreation, Wellness, and Sport majors will be prepared for a career in a related field or graduate school.

Sport Management Educational Outcomes

  1. Sport Management majors will demonstrate an understanding of key concepts, terminology, theory and roles and functions in the field of sport management.
  2. Sport Management majors will be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and will demonstrate technological competencies.
  3. Sport Management majors will demonstrate an ability to conduct methodological research into sport management-related issues.
  4. Sport Management majors will be prepared for professional careers and/or graduate studies in sport management.
