4+1 Program


Students majoring in Mass Communication, Business Administration, Business, Criminal Justice, Psychology, and Sport Management who have a 3.25 or higher GPA after completion of seventy-six (76) hours are eligible to apply for the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership . Commonly known as the 4+1 Program, it allows students to complete an undergraduate and graduate degree in five (5) years. Students provisionally accepted into the program can take up to six (6) of the required thirty (30) graduate courses during their senior year. Graduate courses taken while an undergraduate student are included in full-time undergraduate tuition. Classes count toward both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Application

Undergraduates applying for provisional acceptance must submit the following:

  1. A completed School of Graduate Studies 4+1 application.
  2. The application fee will be waived for current Chowan students.
  3. A current resume.
  4. A written personal statement of 250-400 words, in which the student will discuss his/her professional goals and explain how these goals relate to his/her educational, work, and life experiences. 
  5. Successful completion of at least 76 hours of undergraduate course work with a minimum of a 3.25 GPA (to apply), at least 86 undergraduate hours completed to begin course work.
  6. A reference form from a Chowan University faculty member in the applicant’s program area assessing the student’s ability to successfully complete graduate level coursework.
  7. Must be an undergraduate student currently enrolled full-time in one of the following programs:
  • Mass Communication
  • Business Administration
  • Business
  • Criminal Justice
  • Psychology
  • Sport Management

Conditions of Provisional Acceptance

  1. Students must earn a minimum final grade of B in all graduate coursework.
  2. Students must be able to complete their undergraduate coursework within two semesters of beginning the graduate program without taking more than eighteen (18) credits each semester, inclusive of both undergraduate and graduate coursework.
  3. If a student drops or does not successfully complete an undergraduate course and would thus put himself or herself in a position of needing to take twenty-one (21) hours in the subsequent semester to complete undergraduate requirements, then that student would be allowed to complete the graduate coursework in which he/she is enrolled, but would not be able to progress further in the graduate program.
  4. The student must apply for full acceptance after completing undergraduate requirements to continue in the program.
